Any situation involving severe pain, swelling, bleeding that won't stop, a knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling causing pain, or signs of infection (such as a lump or pus) should be treated as an emergency. If in doubt, call us — we'd rather you ring than wait.

Pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that's not possible, keep it in milk or between your cheek and gum to keep it moist. Call us immediately — time is critical, as the best outcomes occur when treatment is received within 30–60 minutes.

Emergency treatment is priced like any other treatment — based on what's clinically required. The cost depends on what's causing the problem, whether X-rays are needed, and whether the visit is limited to pain relief or includes a definitive repair such as a filling, root canal or crown. We'll always discuss costs with you before proceeding with anything beyond immediate pain relief, so there are no surprises. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and save any pieces of the tooth if you can — sometimes a fragment can be bonded back into place. If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze, and use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on that side and steer clear of very hot, cold or hard foods, as exposed dentine can be extremely sensitive. A dental abscess is a genuine emergency and should never be left to settle on its own. Warning signs include throbbing pain, a bad taste, a pimple-like lump on the gum, swelling in the face or jaw, tenderness when biting, and sometimes fever. Antibiotics alone won't cure an abscess — the source of the infection must be treated, usually with drainage plus root canal therapy or extraction. Call us immediately. If you have significant facial swelling, a spreading infection, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or you feel unwell with a fever, go to a hospital emergency department without delay, as infection can spread quickly.

Keep the crown safe and bring it with you, as it can often be re-cemented in the same visit. Clean the crown gently, avoid chewing on that side, and keep the exposed tooth clean by rinsing with warm salty water. Chemist temporary dental cement can hold a crown in place for a day or two, but never use household glue.
