Dental Crowns in Mount Lawley — Restore Damaged Teeth
Strong, natural-looking crowns designed with digital scanning — rebuilding cracked, worn or heavily filled teeth so you can bite, chew and smile with confidence again.
Protecting the teeth you already have
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. When a tooth has been weakened by a large filling, a deep crack, extensive wear or root canal treatment, a crown holds everything together and takes the pressure off the remaining natural structure. It's one of the most reliable ways to keep a tooth in your mouth for the long term rather than losing it.
At Dental On Railway, crowns are planned and fitted by Dr Simon Frame personally. With more than twenty years of clinical experience and further study in digital dentistry, Dr Frame uses intraoral scanning to capture your tooth in fine detail — which means no trays full of impression material, no gagging, and a far more comfortable appointment. The digital file is sent straight to our ceramist, so the fit and shade can be refined with real precision.
Patients travel to our Railway Parade practice from across Mount Lawley, Inglewood, Maylands, Highgate and the wider Perth area because they see the same dentist at every stage — assessment, preparation, fitting and review. There's free parking directly across the road and ACROD accessible parking at our front door, which makes the two-visit process genuinely easy to fit around work and family.

What We Offer
Treatments & what to expect

Porcelain & Ceramic Crowns
All-ceramic crowns such as e.max and layered porcelain offer the most lifelike result, reflecting light in a similar way to natural enamel. They are our usual choice for front teeth and for anyone who wants a restoration that simply disappears into the smile.
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia is exceptionally strong, making it a sensible choice for back teeth, heavy chewers and patients who grind. Modern layered zirconia still looks natural while withstanding significant biting forces.
Crowns After Root Canal Treatment
A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle over time and is prone to fracture. Placing a crown afterwards seals and reinforces the tooth, and is usually the difference between keeping it for decades and losing it.
Crowns for Cracked & Worn Teeth
Cracked tooth syndrome often shows up as a sharp twinge when you bite or release. Wrapping the tooth in a crown redistributes the load and usually settles the pain, provided the crack hasn't reached the nerve.
Onlays & Partial Coverage Restorations
Where enough healthy tooth remains, a ceramic onlay can restore strength while preserving more natural structure than a full crown. We'll always recommend the most conservative option that will last.
Implant Crowns
A crown fitted onto a dental implant replaces a missing tooth without altering the teeth either side. We plan these carefully with digital imaging so the shape and shade suit your smile.
Crown Replacement & Repairs
Older crowns can develop dark margins, decay underneath or simply come loose. We assess whether an existing crown can be re-cemented or whether replacing it will give a better long-term result.
Bridges Supported by Crowns
Where a tooth is missing, crowns on the neighbouring teeth can support a bridge to fill the gap, restoring your bite and preventing surrounding teeth from drifting out of position.
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Crown fees vary because no two teeth are the same. The main factors are the material chosen (porcelain, layered ceramic or zirconia), whether the tooth needs a core build-up or post first, whether root canal treatment is required beforehand, the laboratory and ceramist used, and how many crowns you're having. Crowns are typically in the four-figure range per tooth in Australia, and most private health funds with major dental cover contribute a meaningful rebate. Rather than quote a figure that may not apply to your situation, we examine the tooth, explain the options and give you a written quote with item numbers before anything begins — so you can check your rebate with your fund and make an unhurried decision.
With good home care and regular check-ups, most crowns last somewhere between ten and twenty years, and many last considerably longer. Longevity depends on how much healthy tooth remains underneath, your gum health, whether you grind your teeth, and how well the margins are kept clean. If you clench or grind, we'll usually recommend a night guard to protect your investment.
A filling is ideal when the remaining tooth is strong enough to support it. Once a cavity or old restoration takes up a large portion of the tooth, or there's a crack running through a cusp, a filling can act like a wedge and eventually split the tooth. Dr Frame will show you the X-rays and intraoral photographs so you can see exactly what's happening and understand why a crown is or isn't being recommended.
The preparation appointment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain — most patients say it feels much like having a large filling. Some tenderness or sensitivity to cold for a few days afterwards is normal. If you find dental treatment stressful, we can support you with Penthrox inhaled sedation, oral sedation, or Twilight IV sedation with our visiting anaesthetist.
Instead of biting into a tray of impression putty, we glide a small camera around the tooth and build a 3D model on screen in a few minutes. It's far more comfortable, particularly if you have a strong gag reflex, and the accuracy means fewer adjustments at the fitting appointment. You can also see the scan yourself, which makes it much easier to understand what we're recommending.
Most crowns take two visits. The first — around an hour to ninety minutes — covers preparation, scanning and a temporary crown. The second, usually two to three weeks later, is a shorter appointment to fit and bond the final crown. If a core build-up or root canal treatment is needed first, we'll map out the sequence and timing at your consultation.
Most funds cover crowns under major dental, though annual limits and waiting periods apply. We provide the specific item numbers in your written quote so you can request a pre-approval from your fund before committing. Our team is happy to talk through how claiming works at our Railway Parade practice — just ask when you book.
